Re: Petition e-2995 to Create a Canadian Musicians’ Support Fund

Dear Minister Guilbeault,

Thank you for your ongoing support of Canadian Arts and Culture. I am writing to you today to respectfully request your support of Petition e-2995 which was tabled in the House of Commons by Member of Parliament, Mr. Ron McKinnon, on February 26th, 2021. https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-2995

Petition e-2995 was initiated by Juno Award Winning Music Teacher, Steve Sainas from Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, B.C. who is also the co-founder of the Canadian Musicians’ Coalition. http://canadianmusicianscoalition.ca/
The petition calls for the creation of a Canadian Musicians’ Support Fund to help rebuild Canada’s devalued and devastated music economy. Music is essential to Canada’s cultural identity and is a scientifically proven necessity for the wellbeing of our citizens. This petition has received support from every province and territory.

On October 8th, 2020, Mr. McKinnon wrote you a letter requesting you please “review how long-term and sustainable funding can be made to our creative industry and ensure that our artists make living wages.”
Currently, most professional music creatives and musicians are unable to earn a living wage from their music due to the exploitative devaluation of their music and the necessary pandemic performance restrictions. As a result, the quality and sustainability of Canadian music creation and performance so essential to our societal needs are in jeopardy.

Now that Petition e-2995 has been tabled in the House of Commons, we respectfully request you review the rationale and reforms presented in this well-researched petition and give the creation of a Canadian Musicians’ Support Fund your full support so that professional music creatives and musicians can earn a sustainable living wage.

These supports are the best way forward to sustainably rebuild our music economy so professional music artists can afford to provide Canadians the quality music that is so essential for the wellbeing of our society.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

(Your First and Last Name)
(City/Town, Province)
